Marching Band

For many years Wolfdog Printing has been providing custom apparel to many different music programs not only in the Metro Detroit area but for many different programs nationwide. When we first started working with these groups, we jumped into online stores. These were a great addition and really helped the ordering process for the organization and its members. Over the years, online stores have evolved into more than just a replacement for the old paper order form. They have been very successful in helping to create unity amongst the members, volunteers, and supporters, raising funds and awareness for the organizations they serve, and overall providing an easier way to order custom apparel.

With the evolution of the online store, the customer demands have also evolved. Since nobody is limited to the order form and keeping things easy, organizations have been getting more items in the online store. This does create issues with the operation of the store and the completion of the items being ordered. Some of these issues have forced many custom apparel companies to introduce different rules to the online stores, basically going back to the limitations of physical order forms. The other common fix is to add as many items in the store as possible with limited options of printing and keep the online store open all year long or at least through the duration of the season. Although this option does seem to be the best, as you can offer items whenever people want to order, this can hurt the overall sales. By keeping the online store open all year, people forget that it’s there or keep putting off making a final purchase until it’s too late. Since the point of the online store is to make ordering easier for the customer and the supplier, the idea of limiting our customers on their print choices and overwhelming them with garment choices seemed like a backward idea. After all, we are a custom apparel company, and the idea of being in business is to grow and take in as much business as you can.

After spending years overwhelming ourselves with more orders coming into the online store and creating more issues than we really want to handle, we decided we needed to make a change. Knowing we did not want to do anything to limit our customers, we had to find a way to enhance the experience. As this is a custom apparel business and the key word being “custom,” we decided to make the overall experience more customized to each organization, meeting face to face to create the perfect solution to the custom apparel needs for not just the season but the entire year. By breaking up the items utilized in a season into different sections, we can offer more items to cover different needs and make the entire process easier than before. The following is an example of what we can offer your organization to make the custom apparel process easier than ever. We have broken up the different sections of the stores to reflect the needs of the organization, opening different sections at different times of the year to line up with your season schedule.

Band Camp.

Here we start off with all the items needed for camp. This section would be available to make a purchase usually around the first summer rehearsals. If you go to band camp in the second week of August, we will want to start taking orders either at your first summer practice or right before school comes to an end for summer. In this section, we have some simple shorts for the hot days in the sun and water jugs to stay hydrated. These jugs do come with a hooked handle so you can keep them off the ground. We can also add in some very simple light-colored inexpensive T-shirts and hoodies. You will also see we have listed a hip pack, or better known as a fanny pack. Many people poke fun at the fanny packs, but for a person that is running around a field all day with an instrument in hand, it doesn’t make it easy to hold on to items such as valve oil, dot books, or pencils to make edits in your dot book. A small hip pack will make it easier to have those items with you and not on the sideline. These items are not intended to be expensive or flashy, just something easy to get through the week. We added the blanket in there because sometimes those nights get a little cold.

Show shirts

This section is all about show shirts. We have the usual items listed here like T-shirts, long sleeves, crewnecks, and hoodies. We can change the items and add one or two more. However, four items for one print are about the limit you would want. This section can be used in different ways. Some programs choose to make a bulk order for show shirts for the students, deliver the shirts to the students at camp, and then open the online store to offer the show shirt design on other items to parents and volunteers. Or open the online store for students to order shirts while also offering the other items at the same time. The beauty of this is you have a choice in how you offer these items.

All things BAND

Here is where we start to have a little fun. This is the section where we can have volunteer apparel, spirit wear, accessories like the blanket and stadium seats. We can start to experiment with different images to be sold to the members or supporters of the program, see what sells and does not sell, and make changes throughout the year. This section can be opened multiple times throughout the year, starting with your first meeting for incoming freshmen. This would be the incoming freshmen and parents’ first introduction to the online store and the process, also giving current membership a look into what is new for this year and a chance to place an order in time for the upcoming season.

Section Shirts

This area is all dedicated to the different sections of the ensemble. Often, we are contacted just before everyone heads off to camp to quickly get the trumpet section shirts done before they leave. We say quickly because the group leaves for camp on Saturday, and whoever has been charged with the task of getting the shirts ordered has decided to wait until Monday before everyone leaves to contact us. Generally, this is being handled by the students, so naturally they would wait until the last second to get this done. Once again, we want to make this a better experience. Most sections will oversee their own shirts and artwork, so to make this happen, we can set up a time to meet with all the student leadership to instruct each section on how to get their artwork to us or how to get the design process started. Once we have finalized each section shirt, we can open this portion of the online store. This timeline can also be the same as the band camp portion of the online store.
